StarOffice is Free… via Google Pack

Filed under: Uncategorized — ctrambler @ 11:44 am

If you can stomach Google on your desktop, then you can get StarOffice for free.

Whether is this a blow to OpenOffice.org will depends on why Google decides to fork out money for StarOffice instead of using the free OpenOffice.org. If it is to get support from SUN then it is a validation on StarOffice’s (and by extension, OpenOffice.org’s) business model. But if it is for the differences between StarOffice and OpenOffice.org then we probably will see some soul searching in OpenOffice.org to see whether is it missing some “critical components”. Overall, I believe even if one sees it as a blow to OpenOffice.org, it is a knock with a form hammer.

With Microsoft Office, it is a knock with a standard hammer as it stands. MSOffice will not be dethroned anytime soon. Far from it. However, Google’s stamp of approval for StarOffice is a validation given to a main competitor of Microsoft’s. The validation comes with real kicks, i.e., enlarging the pool of users exposed to StarOffice and this is potentially at Microsoft’s expense. In the short term Microsoft can weather it. It will be interesting to see the longer term impact.
