Ballmer firing blanks?

Filed under: Uncategorized — ctrambler @ 10:00 am

In case you have other ideas, I meant his recent RedHat threat at a UK event. It is half-expected, and certainly unlike SCO who indeed fire blanks, he was very careful in phrasing his words to avoid lawsuit by RedHat.

Its cheap to say RedHat (or other people who use open source software) owe Microsoft money for Microsoft’s IP. Unless Ballmer is willing to back up his threat by testing his IP bullet in court, he is firing blanks. Ballmer by definition is not stupid, so he is doing so to milk as much as he can from the FUD. Testing it in court will be MAD (mutually-assured destruction). Going after another vendor’s customers instead of the vendor, while completely legal, is ethically frown upon and a bad business decision, and unlike SCO, Microsoft has a lot to lose one of which could be another antitrust investigation.
