IBM interested in buying SUN

Filed under: Uncategorized — ctrambler @ 3:45 pm

IBM is interested in buying SUN. That’s interesting. If it happens I will be sad that a one-time-giant had lost its glitter and become part of a larger group. I won’t be surprised that SUN was sold, nor IBM buying it.

I hope this is good news for open source. IBM has a longer, and some will say, better history with open source than SUN. Unlike Microsoft which only dips its toe in (and find the water too cold for its liking), SUN is half-submerged after Schwartz took over, compared with IBM almost full immersion (in other words, the company who took proprietary-open source model furthest down the road).

I use Eclipse a lot, and  is fully aware of the SWT versus Swing, NetBean vs Eclipse debate. On one hand I love the competition between the two. On the other, I think the competition is fragmenting Java and both parties had spent too much energy trying to outdo each other in PR and hearts-and-minds, the energy would had been better spent working on their respective offerring. If IBM bought SUN, this landscape will change. Right now, I cannot tell how.
